... Tannins are believed to function as antiherbivore defenses, in part, by acting as prooxidants. However, at the high pH found in the midguts of caterpillars, the oxidative activities of different types of tannins vary tremendously: ellagitannins >> galloyl glucoses > condensed tannins.
