Controlled release of bovine serum albumin from electrospun fibrous membranes via an improved emulsion-core technique

Abstract:
Bovine serum albumin (BSA), entrapped in a water-in-oil emulsion as the core, was encapsulated in the shell polymer via emulsion-core (EC) coaxial electrospinning. Fibrous membranes prepared via this improved electrospinning technique could successfully reduce the initial release of BSA. Additionally, the release rate could be tailored by changing the composition of poly(l-lactide-co-glycolide) in the core emulsion. The results showed that EC coaxial electrospinning performed better than conventional coaxial electrospinning with respect to protein delivery in tissue engineering.
