Forms of Nitrogen and Nitrogen Availability in Fescuegrass Sod

- Organic N fractions and ¹⁵N uptake by sudax (Sorghum vulgare), a sudan × sorghum hybrid, were determined in soils that had been in fescuegrass (Festuca arundinaceae) 0 through 5 years and in soils that had been taken out of fescuegrass 0 through 5 years. Percentages of N in the distillable acid-soluble, nondistillable acid-soluble (amino acid N), and nonacidsoluble fractions did not change appreciably. Total N increased with age of sod and decreased with length of time sod had been plowed into the soil. Soil N content had no significant effect on the uptake of ¹⁵N-labeled NH₄Cl applied at a single N rate. The nitrogen percentage taken up by sudax from the soil, however, increased as the soil nitrogen increased.
