Abstract:
This chapter reviews the process of green plant photosynthesis and the fast emission (chlorophyll a and delayed light) changes which have been used to probe that process under the main headings photosynthesis; variations in chlorophyll a fluorescence yield; delayed light emission and summary concluding remarks. Particular attention is given to the water oxidizing system which evolves O2 and reduces plastoquinones and to information obtained in the subnanosecond to millisecond range by using chlorophyll a fluorescence and delayed light emission as probes of reactions in situ. A general outline of that process is deduced and discussed and further experiments to test various hypotheses are proposed.
