Phenolic composition of 'Oso Grande' strawberry fruits in different time of harvest and grown in different production systems

The increase in the productivity and quality of strawberry requires the use of new technologies. Changes in concentrations of bioactive components can occur in fruits considering the system employed in production as well as the time of harvest. Then, the influence of different harvest periods (September, October and November) and the system of production (conventional, greenhouse in the soil, on horizontal bags and vertical columns) on the total phenolic (method of Folin-Ciocalteau), total flavonoids (colorimetric method) and total anthocyanins contents (method of pH differential) were evaluated in fruits of strawberry cultivar ‘Oso Grande’. This experiment was performed in the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil (latitude 28°15’41”S: longitude 52°24’45”W, 709 m). The highest total phenolic content of strawberry was verified in the conventional system, harvested in September (148.24 mg equivalent of gallic acid/100 g of fruits) and November (159.08 mg equivalent of gallic acid/100 g of fruits). For total flavonoids, the conventional system provided the greatest levels in September (35.95 mg equivalent of catechin/100 g fruits) and October (36.88 mg equivalent of catechin/100 g fruits), while the soilless systems had the highest levels in November (35.31 mg equivalent of catechin/100 g fruits). The higher level for total anthocyanins was verified in strawberries produced in conventional system in the first two harvests (31.65 and 35.43 mg equivalent of cyanidin 3-glicosideo/100 g of fruits, respectively), while the fruits of the horizontal systems showed a higher total anthocyanins content in third harvest (54.97 mg equivalent of cyanidin 3-glicosideo/100 g of fruits). In conclusion, the cultivation system as well as the harvesting period influenced the of secondary metabolites composition in ‘Oso Grande’ strawberries.
