Abstract:
Dr. Lee A. Sharp was a strong advocate of ranchers monitoring the private and public rangeland they use, especially with range trend photographs. His 40-year photographic record of natural changes in a shadscale stand shows the value of long-term photographic monitoring of range trend. Public land agencies and ranchers need to make a strong commitment to monitor rangeland. Essential to that commitment is having monitoring methodology that is simple, easy to use, and accurate. The method must not only detect range trend, but also help us determine the cause of change in order to make effective management decisions.
