The value chain of aromatic and medicinal plants in the Maghreb

Due to the diversity of its climate and natural environment, the Maghreb is an ideal location for many medicinal and aromatic plants grown either through hand-picked selection and/or cultivation. These plants are most often exported in raw form or in the form of extracts (essential oils, concretes and resinoids). As a result, we find a combination of wild plants and crops in this region. The category of spontaneous plants contains a wide range of plants, the most noted are: thyme, rosemary, Artemisia, carob, pennyroyal, lavender, oregano and bay leaf. The main cultivated plants are: the flowers of bitter orange, geranium, rose, jasmine, paprika, coriander, cumin, fennel, aniseed, verbena, spearmint, basil, parsley and saffron. Following a presentation of the main AMP Maghreb countries (Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria), the author outlined the features of each production system, the latest technological advancements and its production, in addition to indicating the trading amounts, values and finally the marketing chain. To conclude, the author addresses the constraints faced by each country within the AMP sector.
