On the taxonomy of recent and fossil species of Laurus (Lauraceae)
- FERGUSON, DAVID K.
- Botanical journal of the Linnean Society 1974 v.68 no.1 pp. 51-72
- Laurus nobilis, asexual reproduction, chromosome number, fossils, taxonomy
- A detailed comparison of the vegetative and reproductive structures in Laurus nobilis and L. azorica is presented. Most of the characters used by authors to differentiate the two species show a marked degree of overlap. The only characters for which absolute differences could be demonstrated were the leaf tomentum and chromosome number. The fossil record is discussed. None of the taxa referred to Laurus can be accepted as representatives of the genus. However, an examination made of leaf-remains known as Laurophyllum abchasicum established that these belong to the genus Laurus.
