Energy Dissipation Pool for a SAF Stilling Basin

Abstract:
Results of a physical model study to determine the design for a preshaped, riprapped energy dissipation pool at the exit of a SAF stilling basin located on an irrigation canal in southwestern Colorado are presented. Fine, noncohesive bed material was used to establish the form of the scour patterns used to develop the geometry of the preshaped energy dissipation pool. Tests made to develop the design and to evaluate the performance of a preshaped, riprapped energy dissipation pool at the exit of a SAF stilling basin located on an irrigation canal in southwestern Colorado are described in this paper. The paper discusses the problem and the need for making the tests. The research plan is described and the model test program discussed. The design of the proposed SAF stilling basin and energy dissipation pool is presented, and the performance and evaluation of the design under normal operating conditions are discussed.
