- According to FAO and the National Bureau of Statistics of P.R. China, Chinese persimmon production keeps an increasing trend while total acreage is maintained stable and dried persimmon becomes the main product type for exporting. This paper focuses on latest four years' academic research progress and industry development. Japanese PCNA cultivars were widely extended throughout the nation, with a sharp increase in market share. The diversity of Diospyros genetic resources was investigated by molecular markers and phenotypic characterization in six provinces or regions. Some superior scion cultivars, rootstocks and pollinator genotypes were screened for further extension. The improvement of breeding techniques fastened the achievement of new Chinese PCNA cultivars. From conventional breeding or by bud sport selection, 3 non-PCNA and one PCNA cultivars were released, whereas several potential novel PCNA genotypes are under evaluation. Studies on structural genes and transcription factors suggested their involvement in natural astringency loss in Chinese PCNA persimmon. In addition, several transcription factors genes related to postharvest fruit quality were isolated. Rootstocks, pollen donors and soil nutrition are important factors on yield and quality of PCNA cultivars. Nondestructive technology for fruit quality evaluation and postharvest treatments of 1-MCP with CO2 and N2 were carried out for keeping the fruit fresh. Labor saving practices, optimization, simplified pruning and increase of organic fertilizer application promoted advances in persimmon industry and extension. The health benefits of proanthocyanidins and flavonoids were characterized. More than 200 patents related to tannin absorption, fertilizers, tea, vinegar, fruit processing, package and storage were released. Innovative trade models of persimmon products are now undergoing through internet marketing.
