Steroidal Saponins from Polygonatum cyrtonema

Abstract:
A study of the rhizomes of Polygonatum cyrtonema led to the isolation of three pairs of mixtures of 25R and 25S stereoisomeric spirostanol saponins: (25R, 25S) spirostan-5-en-12-one-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-β-D-galactopyranoside (1a, 1b), (25R, 25S) spirostan-5-en-12-one-3-O-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-O-[β-D-xylopyranosyl(1 → 3)]-O-β-Dglucopyranosyl(1 → 4)-β-D-galactopyranoside(2a, 2b), and (25R, 25S)-3-β-hydroxyspirost-5-en-12-one (3a, 3b). Compound 1a is a new spirostanol saponin named cyrtonemoside A. The structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR.
