- The Muskingum flood routing method is widely used by hydrologists and good results are frequently achieved. However, there is still some dispute about the Muskingum method. In this paper it is shown that the Muskingum method is an approximate solution of the instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH) of the lag and route flood routing method. The integration solution of the Muskingum method for multiple river reaches is also derived. The negative response issue is discussed in relation to the basis of the linear theory of hydrological systems.
