Abstract:
Tree stems exchange carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide with the atmosphere. The biophysical mechanisms controlling these fluxes are not properly understood and consequently not included in process-based models. We highlight advancements and opportunities that will allow to quantify the role of these plant structures for the local-to-global GHG balance.
