Effects of mixed corn stalk substrates on growth and photosynthesis of tomato seedlings

Taking tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) 'Maofen 802' as experiment material, and traditional peat and vermiculite as controls, this study mixed corn stalk substrate with different sizes of zeolite in various ratios as seedling substrates and studied the physical and chemical properties of these substrates and their effects on tomato seedling cultivation. The results showed that adding zeolite to seedling substrate could increase the water-holding porosity, and decrease its pH and electrical conductivity (EC). When the proportion of zeolite reached 20-40%, the physical and chemical properties of the substrate met the requirements of seedling culture and led to emergence rates, growth vigor, and quality of tomato seedlings that were superior to those of the control. The medium (corn stalk/zeolite ratio 70:30, v/v; zeolite in 10 mesh) could improve the quality of tomato seedlings. Total chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters of tomato seedling leaves were highest, and the strong seedling index was significantly higher than those of the control and other treatments.
