Abstract:
As two of the most esteemed fruit vegetables, watermelons and melons are depicted in numerous paintings. We put these, sometimes unusual, depictions into context. We also discuss the genetic basis for the bitter taste of their wild ancestors and for the intense red color of the watermelon flesh.
