Abstract:
DNA methylation is a process by which methyl groups are added to the DNA molecule. Methylation can change the activity of a DNA segment without changing the sequence. The epigenetic modification plays a critical role in regulating many plant growth and developmental processes important to crop production. It is also involved in a number of key molecular processes such as regulating gene expression and maintaining genome stability. This review describes variation of DNA methylation in different plant species, organs, tissues, and cells, and their potential regulatory functions. Recent progress in understanding dynamics of DNA methylation during seed development is also reviewed.
